This piece is about more than LSD, but it is also about LSD.

This work is reminiscent of work I have created in the past. The older work I am referencing was often about identity or even identification. This piece expands on those same themes but it is also about labor. Often times, we identify as our profession. We even introduce ourselves by our professional work titles. Do you feel like our jobs should define us? I leave it up to you, (the viewer) to decide who we are.

Pandemic Video Chat

2020

What if we could meet with other versions of ourselves? Whether it be from other worlds or other lives, I began to ask myself this question when I reached a point of utter loneliness during shelter in place orders due to Covid-19. Out of my loneliness came this piece of video art. I purposely created a conversation with different versions of me that is disjointed and somewhat inauthentic. I left in what seem like jumps mistakes in timing alignment because I wanted to suggest the idea that we are meeting in time, and not space, and everything is constantly in flux.

Layers and Layers of Cake

2020

During the time of Coronavirus, many women are finding themselves in the home while many jobs that are considered to be masculine historically are still considered essential. Women are also more often employed part-time and have less benefits, so they are often first to lose employment. Even if both a husband and wife are able to work from home, they have to make decisions as to who is responsible for the household chores, who will homeschool the children, and who’s job can afford to take the hit. With this in mind, I wanted to make work during this time to address domestic related activities and women’s work. I chose to do this by baking a large cake.

Christine Lynn’s Facial Scrub

2020

The beauty industry perpetuates unrealistic beauty expectations and qualifications for girls and woman. I used the format of a DIY Youtube video as a device to address what I see as absurd means and measures women will go to in order to meet these impossible standards. I address this to suggest we as women could collectively create a new beauty ideology.

Sidewalk

2019

In the development of this idea I was thinking a lot about chance, fate, weight, and the way we lean on certain issues. I was thinking about winning and losing, and also about taking sides. I was thinking about property and ownership. I was thinking about being embraced and belonging or even being un-welcome and turned away. I was thinking about judgement. I was thinking about the middle way. The idea of walking this singular path leads me to think of our path throughout our life, or even lives, and what determines the sides we take and how this can shift throughout time.

Deep Seated

2019

In this work, I elevate an upturned seat on top of a ladder to aggrandize the presentation. There is a junction between the jar of honey and the metal seat where honey drips through both of them. This temporal loss of honey occurs in a messy transference from the jar above to the floor below. This work was influenced by Buddhist parables, ancient Buddhist monastic medicine, and thinking about wealth disparity in relation to religious and socioeconomic themes.

Giving and Giving

2019

The time when I most often practice mindfulness is while cleaning. In this piece, I discuss the connections between different forms of giving and the compassion of cleaning. I create a visual connection between mop heads and my own head so that the mops can be read as figurative heads or in reverse, my head can be interpreted as a mop. The piece is activated by my performance as I run the water through my own hair and give the water to the mop below, which gives water to the mop below, which gives water to the mop below, which gives water to the mop below, which gives water to the mop below.

Pony

In this sculpture and performance, I create an amalgamation by not only simplifying the form of a horse but also by highlighting distinguishable characteristics of a horse’s appearance. By elongating the form, suspending the box, and selecting the placement on my head, I entice the viewer to recognize the artwork as animal and human simultaneously. The apple in the performance is more than a nod to iconic symbolism throughout art history. It functions as device to bring the art into a broader context conceptually. For a horse, an apple is often a special treat. In my performance, I too enjoy the apple.

Lady Parts 03

Within this cyclical existence we meet in the context of my piece. I am the impermanent material visiting this work. I mimic myself through the more permanent and still forms because no matter how hard I try, I cannot be permanent.

Identity can be an authentic representation of ourselves. It can also be a cleverly constructed falsehood. Sometimes others create our identities for us. Identity can exist in an instance as a distinct and intangible idea. It can also be something completely different in the next moment. We are born into an identity already at least partially pre-determined for us by many things from family names, to social security numbers, to finger prints. This series of pieces is inspired by how we are born into the cycle of rebirth within Samsara and our current life is determined by our previous lives that lead up to our life in the present as our true self. While one might speculate about multiple lives over a duration of time, we can also consider the idea that we ourselves have multiplied.
